I bought this vase in Carmel many years ago. I love the shape, color, and smoothness of it. It is a peaceful and soothing vase to me. I have stuff in my house like most people that I know, but my "stuff" is only "stuff" that I truly love and that feeds my soul. I am just now beginning to paint some of this stuff. The pieces of turquoise are scraps from a Navajo man who makes jewelry each piece is what the jewelry was not.

I am painting still life lately because I am trying to learn something more about this process of painting that I love and with still life the subject seems to already be there. When I have an obvious subject with color and shape etc. all of it already there I think that is what I am painting so that is what I concentrate on. My goal is to go beyond the object to the essence of it, of course I have not done this yet, and may never do it but I am delighted with the journey.

Kary's Orange 8"x10"

This orange is from my daughters tree. They are wonderfully sweet and juicy. With all of the turmoil happening right now painting a still life is a soothing meditative process. To focus on this beautiful creation of nature, the color, the form, the weight, the taste and texture. What a miracle it is that this orange filled with nourishment for us came from a dried seed that appeared to be be dead, to a tree, a flower and then fruit that we eat full of vitamins. It could be that this time of turmoil and change will turn out to be just as nourishing for us as well. If all we could have seen of the orange was the seed that appeared to be shriveled and dead how could we have known what the future held. We do not know how the seed produced the orange only that it did.

With this one I did more with the background. Still not happy with it but at least there is some difference. I am still not sure what I am looking for, but when I find it I will know. (I hope) It may be something that is a combination of color, and brush stroke. Alfredo always said It is the breath Jan and he is right. There is a connection between the breath and the brush stroke that I am still looking for. Where is it? Is it before, during or after? I have to remember to breath first. Fruit, another still life. Painting a still life is somehow soothing. Every day I know what I am painting and how it should look at the end of the process. There it is right in front of me. If it does not work I know why - maybe I can fix it or maybe not but still I know where I am. As opposed to the abstracts which I do not know, as I am searching for something that I cannot see but only feel. Expressing feelings in line, shape and color in an authentic way is a wonderful challenge and exciting (when it works) but not reassuring or soothing. It's a good thing that I learn from both. Landscape and faces are somewhere in between.

The essence of prey 9"x12"

My process in the making of an abstract or mixed media painting is to find what is already there and remove all that it is not. I do this by adding layers of paint until it speaks to me - or not. My hope is to find the essence of whatever is there and to learn something new in the doing. At first the only thing in this piece was the skull, which is a familiar symbol to me and means many things so I thought I knew why it was there and that it was finished so I hung it up in the studio to dry so it could be varnished. Then after a few weeks I saw out of the corner of my eye the bird, and the bird was even larger than the skull! Now how could I have missed that? Why is it there? The bird is a bird of prey which one I don't know maybe none just an idea of one. "Someone said" the artist always paints themselves and I believe this to be true, especially with the abstracts, so - what am I doing with a bird of prey and a skull? What part of me is a person of prey? Setting aside the the idea's of food, shelter, transportation, war, and politics which have all kinds of polarities. What could be "good" about this idea of prey? To hunt, catch, or eat, a creature hunted of caught for food. I am a why person so I am then the hunter according to Webster. Scavenger another word that comes to mind! "to gather by searching" well this is what I do, so now it fits. The polarity is balanced. There is always good and not so good in all ideas. I am a why person and now I know the why of this one.

This is a long windy boring explanation of a painting and the process of painting it, which is why I usually only give the size and medium.

Two Crows and the bone 24"x36"

This is an older painting, it seems that I have been painting crows for a long time. I painted bones for a very long time too. I have a very large elk head over my fireplace, and many bones around my home and yard. People have been bringing me bones forever. I find them very beautiful. Georgia O' Keef said that every painter had a favorite shape that they painted and painted over and over. This is certainly true of me. The shape of the skull of a cow,deer,elk etc.

appears over and over in my work and when I see it in other work it always attracts me. It is one of Jung's universal symbols as well.

The Crow ---- Crows are important to me, they remind me that I am in the right place at the right time but not why I am there. Maybe that is for me to find out on my own. Anyway I am happy with this piece. The crow was already there in the texture I just had to paint the place around him/her.

There is a place on the way back from Arizona that Kary and I always stop for a break and a cold drink. It is a Dairy Queen kind of place, and is always full. It is at the end of a long stretch of empty desert and a needed place to stop. It is always full of crows. I think they gather for the thrown away food that people leave there. They all are always busy moving from one place to another and seem to be talking to one another about what they find.

I am trying to learn something new. Not sure what yet. I am using pastels, to see if they will be easier to take with me when I go someplace to paint. at first I thought they would but now I am not so sure. Anyway I am working with them and I am for sure learning more about color and value. Learning to see more and better. Still life is the easiest way for me right now. In landscape the light is always changing and so then so is the color and value. On a still life it stays the same, and only I change from day to day.

I am still painting still life. It is another apple from my tree. There is so much to be learned from still life. Learning to paint what you see, learning to see more and better. I always hope that I end up with something that looks enough like the object to know what it is. I always start out to paint realistic but somewhere along the way the painting takes over and I end up with an impression rather than "the real thing". At least I am always surprised. And sometimes I am pleased. Maybe this is my way of always learning. I am studying color right now and of course it is not local color but which color does this color call for. Is the color of the apple wanting something else. Must be so since so far I have not painted it as it is and if I do I don't like it. Of course there is always another chance. I think that is one of the reasons that I do art. I am never quite there close but not there, so I have to try again.

This is an apple from my apple tree. It is not quite ripe yet but they made good apple sauce and still life material. I am happy with this one it goes well with the pears. I am still at home but getting ready to go to Carmel. I am going to try to go the second week of Nov. for a couple weeks. I wonder if it will change my painting. Every time I go somewhere different it changes. I do not do this on purpose. I seem to be very affected by where I am physically and mentally. I don 't know why I am surprised at this but I am.

The reference for this painting was our trip to the Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico. after we left the highway the land was stunning. There were just piles of huge white and ochre stone. They were like left over mountains scattered here and there. The white is the same shade as the pottery so that must be where the clay is gathered. This is how it felt to me not exactly like it looked.

Three crows - Taos light at sunrise-- crows facinate me-- for some reason I love them and look for them everywhere. On our last trip to Taos and Cave Creek I photographed crows everywhere we went. These were three who were sitting on a fence at dawn just outside of our motel room in Taos. It had rained the night before and the sun was just coming up. I went outside to take pictures of the sun coming over the mountain and there they were. They seemed to want to pose for me and turned from side to side sometimes looking right at me. I must have taken 50 photos of them. The day before we had spent at the taos pueblo so I used that for the background. This painting is large 36"x48" itis mixed media on canvas. This is my Grand daughter Melissa who just moved to Carmel (by the sea) . She is living in a hundred year old little house that is just in a perfect location for walking all over and to the beach. She can walk to the Tuck box for breakfast!!!! There is a small studio in the back that is just right to paint in! I am going for a visit very soon! I am going to PAINT-PAINT-PAINT. Carmel is one of my favorite places in the whole world. The light is so wonderful for an artist. Then there is the smell when everyone has their fireplaces going then it smells very like Taos.
Last weekend she went for a walk and took some pictures to entice me to come a little sooner than we had planed. I am very tempted. This was a very long walk.

I know I said no more pears, but here is another one with a darker background. I wanted to see what would happen with a darker background and this is not so bad. (maybe) I like the square format. It used to be that everyone thought a square was hard to paint because of the difficulty of the composition, but I have always liked them.

Because i have so much more time to paint I can take as long as I like to "work" on a piece. I am finding that the time of staring at the painting may be the most valuable. It seems that I am not doing anything even to me, but something is going on beyond my thinking that if I let it it will add to the work. I find that I see more as I sit in front of the pear and the painting of the pear and both begin to speak to me. What it has to say is another thing altogether.

Another pear That's because I like the colors and the shape of this fruit. I am almost finished with it tho tomorrow I will list a 36"x36" one and then I am finished for awhile I hope. I paint every day that I am home. This is what I have always wanted to do so I am doing it finally. I think that is why I paint impressionist/sorta real/and then abstract. I feel as if I must paint all that is in me in order to make up for lost time. It is as if they are layered in there and under each one there is another that "must" be painted. Of course many go into the recycle bin but those are as important as the ones that don't because underneath there it is the next painting/shape/color/feeling. I know many artists find the subject or style and perfect it. that does not seem to be my way yet. Maybe after a few more layers I will be there and begin that process.

The wall of the canyon. Is this the boundary protecting the floor? It reflects the sky but in a different way than the floor does. All of the canyon is influenced by all that is above it and around it. Artists always paint themselves in some form or another. I have always believed this. My one and only teacher said to me "what do you have to say" you have to have something to say! I have never had anything to say. I can only express my self. I can only know another person, place, or thing through my self and my awareness. If I am "outside of my self" I then do not really know what I think only what the other thinks or is. To express it I must come back to my self and express it through my self. It then becomes my impression, which may not be the "thing" at all. Oh well that's the way it is for me and I must make do with that.

The floor of the canyon. When you stand at the edge of Canyon de Chelly and look down the floor is a wonderful pattern. The colors and patterns change all of the time with the wind and water. The first time I stood there I could hear the sheep bells rising on the wind. I love this canyon.

I have two apple trees in my yard and I could not resist. I started this painting with the seed I was not going to paint the whole apple just an abstraction of it. But once I got started it needed more so I kept adding until I had the whole thing. Most people who look at this do not realize that the seed is on the outside. (they think it is just a bump or a worm thing) It only goes to show that we cannot hide our inside no matter how hard we try it always shows, it is just that others do not always recognize it (they think it is just, maybe a bump, on our self) So now I have an apple with a message!

I did a series of these a couple of years ago and one man bought them all for his restaurant. It seemed to me that the sky and the canyon were intermixed. At least they were in my mind. Arizona again, I am always fascinated by how the color of the land of an area is reflected in the art and"things" that people surround themselves with, even clothes and jewelry. It seems to me that each "place" has an energy that infuses itself into this process. Is this because, do you suppose, that energy wants to be reflected back to itself just as we do? I see myself in the land and the land sees itself in me? Is what I like or dislike about the land I like or dislike about myself. Is it all about knowing oneself so we can accept ourselves and then the "other" without

judgement?

Another Arizona painting. "Dance to the Dawn" Again, there seems to be an order to my impression of Arizona. A week in Cave Creek has left me with a sense of the color and line of the area. There is so much more to the desert than one sees on the surface. There are times of deep silence just as the light begins to change in the very early morning 4:00 or 4:30 ------- then the singing begins-- birds, insects, deer, coyote, especially the babies. Everyone makes a joy-filled noise to greet the dawn.

The color of the silence seems to be the very deep purple blue--- then the soft warm of the dawn----and the reds and oranges of the full morning. As the sun rises the colors change every few minitues.

We wandered into some galleries and talked to a very interesting woman who knew all of the artists and galleries there. She gave us so much good information. Lots of paintings of wine bottles, grapes and vineyard's. The land all around there is lush and soft. My reference for this painting is the Taos Pueblo one of my favorite places. This is more how it felt than how it really is. The adobe changes color according to the time of day, and this was sunset. The doorway is my own addition. I love the shape of the keyhole door way. The way that the adobe breaks down and cracks form.

This is a mixed media nude woman with a canyon background. I used oil and rice paper in kind of a collage way. As I was painting this one all of a sudden there she was so I just pulled her out a little and glued some rice paper on for a little dark. It is coated with a high gloss medium to protect the rice paper and the surface. This is the second paintng that I have attached paper to and I like them. Maybe this is a new direction for me for awhile.

The Taos Pueblo is a sacred place for me. This is where I get my drums, and smudge sticks. The people who are there are warm and smiling as they welcome those who come. In the early morning when you walk in you can smell pinon burning and bread baking. They bake bread to sell and in the morning it is still warm. I bought a smudge stick that was still damp with dew. The pine and sage smell was intense. This painting is from my memory of that day. The color, the smells, the soft sounds of welcoming voices one to another.

My Grandfather grew sweetpeas when I was a child. They were my favorite flower. It was the fragrance. The colors are wonderful too. They look just like they smell! The apple 5"x7 oil painting

It's the new year and I am wondering about dreams, goals, direction, what, how when and where. Where to focus and on what? What do I want from this new year? In 2005 I painted a very large 20'x8' painting which took me a little over a year. Last year that painting was hung, I bought a new house and moved to the Sacto. area Rocklin, actually. I packed and unpacked, had my house painted red, gold, tourquise and a red purple. (Thio violet) Made the master bedroom into a studio, removed carpet and put down tile installed lights. Had bookshelves built in two rooms. (I have lots of books) (I had all of this work done by a perfect handyman who was willing to work with a crazy artist.) Then I started the painting a day thing. I paint every day anyway just larger. I have gone from 20 foot by 8 foot to 4 inches x5 inches! One thing that I know for sure is that I want to be a better painter. It's the how of this that is in question. Today I am doing this by just looking and painting. Maybe it really is the miles of canvas that will help me to improve. The artist that was my teacher for a few years, said to me: Jan, in order to be a" real" artist you have to have something to say. I have had a lot to say but it is only after I finish a painting and then only to myself. I don't think that this is what he meant. In any case that is how it is with me.

I am painting these stones bigger than they really are. I think this is because for some reason they are important to me. This is one that came in a plastic bag left on my driveway by someone advertising landscaping. These little bags are there every few days from different people. The stones are there to keep the bag from blowing away. I save these stones to put in the bottom of pots when planting flowers, so I always have a bowl on the counter with some in it. This one spoke to me, so here it is.

Stones, I have stones everywhere, in baskets, bowls, shelves,boxes, outside and inside. I pick them up where ever I go and they are all special. They carry so much history. Friends bring me stones from their travels. My Grandaughter just got back from England and Irland, and she brought me stones! The stones reflect the color of the landscape that they come from. That makes them a good reminder of the actual color of the land.
