The fourth stone 4"x5" oil painting

Stones, I have stones everywhere, in baskets, bowls, shelves, boxes, outside and inside. I pick them up where ever I go and they are all special. They carry so much history. Friends bring me stones from their travels. My Grandaughter just got back from England and Irland, and she brought me stones! The stones reflect the color of the landscape that they come from. That makes them a good reminder of the actual color of the land.

The size of this painting is 4"x5" unframed, it is painted on gallery wrap canvas and does not need frameing. If you would like to purchase this painting email me at phyljan@aol.com

Two Red Pears 8"x10" oil painting

Two pears dancing. Pears always look so human. I love the really red ones, well the brown ones too, and then there is yellow and green. I guess I like them all. There are no two alike. No two alike of anything actually. Today I am wondering if I use too much color. I often use more color than is there of course, I find what I like and exaggerate it. There was a time when I did a lot of white on white, but at that time that was what came to my attention. The world is full of so much that what comes to my attention might be important to me. And then there is the question of why is this, what does it mean, if anything, and what am I trying to say to myself? Who else would notice this if I did not?

The size of this painting is 8"x10" unframed it is painted on canvas. If you would like to purchase this painting email me at phyljan@aol.com.

New Mexico Sky 5"x5"

This is a painting that I painted for my Grandson for Christmas. I did two 36"x48" paintings much like this one, and he loved them. They were commisions so I painted him a little one as a reminder of the ones that he liked so much. There are so many paintings around this house hanging, leaning, they are everywhere there is a little space. So when they notice one it really is special to them and I want them to have it.

Crow Womans Path Watercolor

sold
Crows fasinate me. They always bring a message, sometimes from the past and sometimes from the future. I can usualy tell if I am in the right place at the right time if Crow is there or if I hear one call. A few years ago I bought my son his drum (it was time for him to have his own voice). I found the perfect one at the Taos pueblo. The drum makers name was Water Crow! Crows are not easy to paint they are black on black with a little iridescence in the right light. But for me worth the effort. I don't do many watercolors any more but this one called for it..

Landscape abstract canyon floor 4"x5"

The floor of Canyon de Chelly again. The last time I was there it was the month of July and it was very hot. We drove around the rim and as we stopped at one of the lookouts we heard someone drumming and the whole canyon was filled with the heartbeat of the earth. It was a wonder filled experience. There is music in the canyon. The bells of sheep, the call of the hawk, the soft sound of the wind and now the drum.

The size of this painting is 4"x5" unframed it is painted on primed canvas. All of these little canyon paintings are studies for larger ones. They work very well to work out the composition. If you would like to purchase this painting email me at phyljan@aol.com

New Mexico Sandia Mountain landscape 16"x20"

soldI used to live in Albuquerque. ( this was many many years ago, before freeways and tramways.)Our house was at the edge of the mesa and this is what I was able to see each and every day. I saw the sun rise and set on this wonderful mountain. Sandia means watermelon and at sunset it was that color. My first painting was of that mountain and these many years later I am still painting it.

California Hills 5"x7'

Color, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, naples yellow, cerulean blue, and quinacridone gold green shade! I love the names of the paint. These are the ones that I used in this painting. I have an artist friend who lives in Albuquerque, and when we talk we can describe almost any color to one another because we both know just what these names (and all the other wonderful ones) look like even when they are mixed or underpainted with another color. Its universal artist launguage. Then of course there is line, which is a whole other subject and conversation.

This painting is 5"x7" it is painted on stretched canvas. If you would like to purchase this painting email me at phyljan@aol.com.

Nastutriums 9"x12"

sold
These Nastutriums are from my yard, they are not bloming right now, but I took some pictures last year. Nastutriums give of their color with such intensity. It's like they give it all to their blooming. Although when the flower turns to seed they are just as lovely, but softer and more contained.

The size of this oil painting is 9"x12" unframed. If you would like to purchase this painting email me at phyljan@aol.com

Nude 10"x20"

It does not matter what the subject matter is the process is the same. Color, shape, line and the space between all of that. Then the final element, how does it feel to me? Does it speak to me in some way, and what does it have to say? If I can answer those things, then I am happy. I have learned something!

The size of this painting is 10"x20" unframed, it is painted on canvas. If you would like to purchase this painting email me at phyljnan@aol.com

California landscape Orange Sky 12"x12"

I was facing east when the sun was setting and this is what I saw. This is the best time of day for wonderful color, unless it is dawn with the sun coming up and I am facing west. Both times of day are magic. The magic of transformation in the time between. It is like the time just before sleep or waking when anything is possible.

Abstract landscape painting 10"x20"

Another canyon wall. The lines or cracks in the wall feel to me like spiderwebs or lace. The infinite Lace Maker. Spider Woman spun the web from the center of the earth up so that the people could live on the earth instead of in it.

A friend-- charcoal drawing on 100% rag paper

I do not know why this post is messed up but I cannon find out how to fix it, The second part does not show up in the edit feature. Sorry for the mess.
Sometimes I just have to do faces. They are not anyone in paticular they are just familiar. I use a photograph, or two or three, and sometimes anyone who is around, to find the placement of the nose eyes etc. I am not capable of doing a likeness so it really does not matter what I use. I keep working until they have spoken, I am pleased, or I feel finished. In this way I am able to tell myself things that otherwise I would not know. I either like it or I don't but there it is. This one I liked. The size of this charcoal drawing is aprox. 18"x24" unmatted and unframed, it is done on 100% rag paper. If you would like to purchase this drawing email me at phyljan@aol.com for the details.. I am not sure why. Sometimes I use a photograph, sometimes more than one, sometimes whoever is around to find placement of nose eye etc. I am not capable of doing a likeness so it really does not matter what I use if anything. I just keep working until I am pleased or that I feel that all has been said that needs to be said. In this way I am often able to tell myself something that otherwise I could not say. This one is charcoal on 100% rag paper.

Arizona mountain landscape oil painting

These mountains can be painted from far enough away so that I could see more of the whole. Therefore there was no need to "abstract" them. There is a foreground and a background. Things that come before and things that come after. I can tell where the mountain is in relationship to the things around it. Another place in my inner landscape.

This painting is 9"x12" unframed it is painted on canvas. If you would like to purchase it email me at phyljan@aol.com All questions and comments are welcome.

Landscape Abstract Canyon Wall

sold The soft morning light on the canyon wall - a gift of mother earth and father sky- polished by the hand of God.

Another wall, there have been a few in my life. Of course its Canyon de Chelly. One of the meanings of Abstract, according to Webster, is the concentrated essence of a larger whole. Of the many meanings this suites me the best. Could it be, that this is me?

The size of this painting is 12"x16" unframed, it is painted on canvas board and is ready to frame. If you would like to purchase this painting email me at phyljan@aol.com. All questions and comments are welcome.

Pueblo abstract landscape painting

sold
Chaco Canyon at night. This is how I imagine it would look like as the last rays of the sun lingered touching the walls with glory. I think that the walls would still be warm with the heat of the day. Chaco Canyon is a sacred place with many secrets. I would like to know more of them.

This painting is 16"x20" unframed, it is painted on canvas and is ready to frame. If you would like to purchase this one email me at phyljan@aol.com for the details. All comments and questions are welcome.

Abstract landscape Canyon Wall oil painting

sold This is a closeup of a wall of a canyon.(face to the wall). Sometimes in my life I find that I am in front of a wall and cannot move because the wall seems so solid. My perception is that on the other side of the wall is something that I want very much. Well, I have learned (through trial and error) that I might as well find the beautiful in this wall that is in front of me. I just might be here awhile and why not enjoy it for what it is. In this was my day is filled with the joy of beauty and as a bonus there is something to paint.
Here is another Canyon de Chelly, it is 5"x7" and it is painted on primed canvas board. If you would like to purchase this painting email me at phyljan@aol.com for the details.

Abstract 9"x12"

This painting has a little harder shapes and colors as opposed to some of my other abstracts. Still it is based on the same references as the other ones, which is Canyon de Chelly. I use Canyon de Chelly with its many colors, shapes, line, moods, weather, and sounds to record my many states of being on any given day that I paint it. After thinking about it, this is true of all my paintings. I seem to feel them more than see them. (this means I suppose that for me feeling is believing not seeing)
In the 'heat' of the day all of the subtle color is bleached out of the stone leaving a feeling of harshness.

The size of this painting is 9"x12" unframed, it is painted on a canvas board and is ready to frame. If you would like to purchase this painting it is 100.00 with shipping and insurance added. Email me at phyljan@aol.com for details,

California landscape and sky 12"x12"
